UK meets USA

Cadets and staff from 51 (Orton) Squadron recently took part in the very first joint camp between Air cadets from the UK and cadets and staff from the USA at RAF Marham in Norfolk.

From the 15th of August the week included US cadets showing their UK counterparts silent rifle drill. Cadets also challenged themselves on the confidence course and flying at RAF Wyton in the versatile training aircraft the Grob Tutor. Some of the highlights of the week included an action packed Go Kart competition that would grace the tracks of any F1 circuit, and firing the New cadet general purpose rifle the L98 A2.

The cadets and staff were also front row spectators at the RAF Marham Richard Burns memorial Rally which was opened by Harry Potter star Rupert Grint, aka Ron Weasley. The Red Arrows also treated the cadets to a flying display, a fly past by the Battle of Britain Memorial flights very own Lancaster Bomber.

An action packed week finished with a Night Exercise, which tested the cadet’s teamwork and field skills to the very end.

Cadet Corporal Rhys Franklin and Cadet Sergeant Jamie Cornwall both of 51 (Orton) Squadron said, “To be on the very first joint UK/USA camp was a privilege and an honour. The week was great with plenty of activities to challenge and test you to the very limits.”

Pilot Officer Angela Bone, commanding officer of 51 (Orton) Squadron who also attended the week said, “It was great to see how the cadets and staff from both countries mixed really well, and worked together from the outset as though they had been together for years. An action packed week that was enjoyed by everyone.”
