Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal 2012
It may have been a long time coming, however on Sunday 51 (Orton) Squadron's Flight Sergeant Darren Smith was awarded his Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal, by the Lord Lieutenant of Lincolnshire Tony Worth.
The medal was created to mark the sixtieth anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II's accession to the throne. Amongst other organisations, the medal is awarded to those who have given their time as a member of the HM Armed Forces either as regular or as reserve and who have served longer than 5 years.
Flight Sergeant Darren Smith has been an adult uniformed staff member of 51 (Orton) Squadron since early 2006 and prior to this he was a Civilian Instructor for many years. You will often see Flt Sgt Smith making his way around events in Peterborough, either leading the cadets in the squadron band, or being head chef of our field kitchen. At the squadron either on squadron nights or on Saturdays and Sunday's he will give up his time to teach the cadets in many fields, such as Drill, Radio Comms, Field Cooking, Night Exercise, to name just a few of his skills.
Sergeant Logan Robinett said, "I have been with 51 (Orton) Squadron now for over 5 years, and Flight Sergeant Smith has been a role model and someone to aspire to. Nothing is ever too much trouble for him, and he is always happy to help us cadets and take us to activities and develop our skills, but more importantly he always makes us laugh and is approachable."
Corporal Conor Wells and Cadet Kieran Robinett commented "If it was not for Flight Sergeant Smith, we would not have had the opportunities we have both had in the Air Training Corp. Flt Sgt Smith listens to what we want to do as a career and he has supported our development within the squadron and also on camps by allowing us to develop our Chef skills. He is great!!"
