Flying the Flag.
Monday the 24th June 2013, marks the start of a very important week for so many people, throughout the UK. Towns and Cities will Fly the Armed Forces Flag in preparation for the celebration this weekend of those who are and have been in the armed forces.
Peterborough Town Centre was no different, and 10 Cadets from 51 (Orton) Squadron were proud to be part of this event. Sgt Logan Robinett commented "It was right and fitting to be part of this event, to be able to stand amongst people who had seen action. It was a privilege to be given the opportunity to present the Squadron's banner."
The Service commenced with the Parade forming up in front of the War Memorial. After the initial prayers, it was only right to hear from the son of a Merchant Navy seaman, as this year sees the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Atlantic. Throughout the Second World War some 30,000 Merchant Seamen sadly lost their lives in the cold water of the Atlantic. Lt Colin Marshall RNR, Lt Colonel Alison Falcon and Wing Commander Mark Shephard, then offered Prayers on Intercession.
At 10.30 Rev Rob Deans lead the Commitment and the Flag was raised by the Mayor Peterborough, Cllr June Stokes. All those present fell silent and the atmosphere of respect could be sensed by all those attending.
The Cadets were, then invited to participate in morning coffee in the Town Hall before departing. Flt Lt Andy Mason said “I am pleased that so many cadets felt it was right to attend this event. To not only represent our Squadron but also to give their personal thanks to so many people."
