The Deputy Lord Lieutenant Cliff Walker MBE.JP.DL, inspected the Cadet parade prior to the commencing of the service, and each cadet who was lucky enough to speak with the Lord Lieutenant was grateful for the opportunity. The opening Hymn, “God is our strength and refuge”, played by the City of Peterborough Concert Band, saw the many bannersBattle of Britain parade down the centre of St John’s Church Peterborough. The pride on the faces of the Banner party, could be seen by all, both the veterans who had seen much conflict and the young who have dreams of joining the military later in their lives.

The service was led by Revd Canon Ian Black, Vicar of Peterborough, with readings from the Mayor of Peterborough, Councillor June Stokes, The Station Commander of RAF Wittering, Group Captain Damian Alexander and Wing Commander M Shephard.

A very heart felt Sermon was offered by The Revd Squadron Leader Ian Brown, which prompted much thought into the lives of those today compared to those of 73 years ago as they ventured out to protect their country.

No Battle of Britain Service could ever be complete without The Airmen’s Hymn and this was duly sung as the Standards were collected and the Banner party lined up for the National Anthem prior to the Procession and the Colours returning to the West End of the Church.

“Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few”
