Back in Time!!!
Last weekend saw, the 1940’s weekend at Holme, and what a weekend it was!!!!
Some 20 members of 51 Orton Squadron attended both days to step back in time and experience life as it was. It wasn’t all about having fun, even though plenty was had; the cadets and staff worked hard to help the general public to experience just a small element of ATC life.
The weekend started early with the setup of several activities including comms, cake/tea and sandwich bar, and of course our now ever expanding band.
Many members of the public arrived in 1940’s dress, stall’s decorated in years of memorabilia and restored cars / bikes could be seen everywhere. The atmosphere was simply amazing.
No such weekend would be complete without a Service of Remembrance and 51 Orton Squadron’s band was the escort. The outside service was led by Reverend Gordon Limbrick with prayers for the armed forces both present and past, and the traditional hymn of ‘Jerusalem’. The participants of 51 Orton Squadron should be proud of themselves as only praise could be heard.
The Air Cadets were rewarded for their efforts of the weekend with a tank ride, and even though at times it was painful, it was enjoyed and we thank all the organisers for their time, and invitation for us to be part of such a memorable event.
